OTTOVILLE — Sunday was the worst day of Andrew Roeder’s life, which began with an arrest and ended with an explosion that sent him to the hospital with burns.

Roeder, 22, remained in critical condition Monday at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, to where he was flown by helicopter after a Sunday night explosion at his home at 403 Third St. in Ottoville.

Firefighters were called to a house explosion about 9:40 p.m., which rocked the residential neighborhood of this Putnam County village.

When firefighters arrived, Roeder was outside the house.

“He got out of the house on his own,” Ottoville Fire Chief Dennis Bendele said.

Officials said Roeder suffered from burns.

A cause for the fire had not been determined and remained under investigation, Bendele said.

The Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to help determine a cause.

Roeder does not own the home. He lived there alone and was renting it from Bruce Rellinger, Bendele said.

The fire took about an hour to fight but firefighters were on the scene until Monday morning, Bendele said.

In a separate incident, Roeder was arrested at 1:47 a.m. in Delphos and charged with having an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a public place, Delphos Police officials reported.
