LIMA, 11 a.m. Jan. 2 — With a vote from City Council Monday, the Lima Locos will have a new home, in the city. After more than 20 years playing at Shawnee schools’ facilities, the collegiate-level baseball team will move to Simmons Field, starting with this season in June, city and team officials announced this morning. The field is off of Metcalf Street near the Ottawa River.Mayor David Berger and team owners have reached a proposed agreement that requires council’s approval with legislation on Monday’s meeting. The five-year agreement involves no cash, but commits the Locos as caretaker of the field. The team plans investments in the field and facilities, according to a city news release. The field will also be available for American Legion baseball and some city recreation programs, but will be reserved primarily for the Locos, said Ric Stolly, director of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Division.“Simmons Field is a grand facility, with tremendous potential for growth and the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Division would have been challenged to find labor and resources to maintain it,” Stolly said. “The Locos have a need for a home field. They also have the resources to maintain the facility.”
