OTTAWA — Results of the Blanchard River flood survey will be discussed during a town hall meeting later this month.More than 840 people responded to the survey that included questions dealing with personal and business property damages surrounding the Blanchard River flood in 2007 and whether the local, state and federal government should be accountable for solving the problem. The survey was taken by the offices of state Reps. Robert Sprague, R-Findlay, and state Rep. Lynn Wachtmann, R-Napoleon, and state Sen. Cliff Hite, R-Findlay. The legislators wanted input on how flooding affects residents.Sprague said the majority of respondents expect all levels of government to work together to resolve the problem. “They are holding all officials accountable,” Sprague said.Sixty-two percent of respondents indicated they had flood damage. This include 290 responses that had more than $10,000 of damage.“This means just with those answering there was a minimum of $3 million aggregate damage from the flood,” Sprague said. The legislators intend to use the results of the survey as they lobby for $6 million in funding originally earmarked for the effort that fell away as the state faced a budget crunch. The state originally committed $3 million in three consecutive biannual budgets, but only the first $3 million was appropriated.Sprague is leading the effort to secure the $6 million through general or specific funding. He said there is a specific fund in the new budget that could go to the effort. The original funding got the ball rolling and led the Army Corps of Engineers to begin studying the problem. You can comment on this story on www.limaohio.com.
