LIMA ?? A man who fatally shot his girlfriend in the face in 2012 pleaded guilty Thursday to voluntary manslaughter.

Timothy Brown, 48, faces up to 14 years in prison when he is sentenced June 3.

Valeda Thomas, 32, was shot to death Oct. 3 inside her home at 218 W. Murphy St. She died of a single gunshot to the head.

Prosecutor Juergen Waldick said the plea was a good resolution and will put Brown in prison for a long time.

??Based on the conduct, we think it??s appropriate,? Waldick said.

The shooting happened during a fight between the couple, Waldick said.

Brown will have to serve whatever sentence the judge gives him. He will not be eligible for early release, Waldick said.

At earlier hearings, Brown and his attorney seemed to be preparing for a possible self-defense claim. An officer testified previously that Brown said he feared Thomas was going to shoot him.
