LIMA — Sgt. David Gillispie has been released from the hospital after being stabbed in the head Wednesday evening outside of the Lima Police station.
Gillisipie was walking out the front door of the police station with another officer when approached by a man who started swinging a screw driver at him. The two scuffled and Gillispie ended up shooting the assailant, ima Police Maj. Tony Swygart said, noting the shooting was in self defense.
The man he shot will not be identified until he is charged. He remains in the hospital recovering from two gunshot wounds, Swygart said. Police would only say he was 41 years old.
Another officer, Justin Wireman, who walked outside with Gillispie was not injured, Swygart said.
Police believe the incident was a case of “suicide by cop.” That belief is based on calls from the man’s wife who told sheriff investigators minutes before the incident her husband was suicidal and looking to try to harm an officer, Swygart said.
