LIMA — A 14-year-old boy accused of shooting another teen in the head during the summer could be indicted on a murder charge in the next few weeks. An Allen County grand jury will meet later this month and may consider the case against Dederick Matthews Jr., who prosecutors said was the triggerman in the Aug. 30 shooting death of 16-year-old Eric Armstead. The case against Matthews, now 15, was moved to adult court. Judge Glenn Derryberry of Allen County Juvenile Court made the decision to grant the prosecution’s request to try Matthews as an adult after determining Matthews did not stand a good chance of being rehabilitated in the juvenile justice system. The ruling was a major blow against Matthews, As a juvenile, he was facing incarceration until his 21st birthday. As an adult, however, he faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.Matthews is the second juvenile to be bound over in the case. Ritchie Johnson, 17, is charged as an adult with complicity to murder. Officials said Johnson and three other teens were with Matthews when Matthews fired shots at people on a porch at 620 Madison Ave., striking Armstead once in the head killing him. Armstead had an ongoing feud with Matthews’ group.A suppression hearing was scheduled for March 21 in Johnson’s case.Prosecutors also are seeking to try 15-year-old Devontae Upshaw as an adult. He has a hearing later this month in Juvenile Court on that issue. Only one juvenile, Shaquille Bulls, has a case that is scheduled to stay in Juvenile Court in exchange for his cooperation against his co-defendants. Xavier Arrick was the only adult charged. He faces a murder charge but that is expected to change because he is cooperating with prosecutors and has agreed to testify against his co-defendants.You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
