LIMA — A special account established to help Lima’s police and fire departments make purchases that could not be made through the city’s general fund is nearly dry. On Thursday, 6th Ward Councilor Derry Glenn asked civic groups and others to donate.

The Safety Service Support Fund was envisioned more than six years ago by former 5th Ward Councilor Tommy Pitts, Glenn said. Since then, the fire department has purchased breathing apparatus, and the police department this week received the blessing of a city council committee to purchase new workout equipment.

“We want to thank everyone for supporting the Safety Service program. I want to thank former 5th Ward Councilor Tommy Pitts for creating this program,” Glenn said. “We have over $12,000 over the years that was donated from different folks to our police and firefighters. They do an outstanding job.”

Donations can be earmarked for either department, Glenn said. If no designation is made, the donation will be split evenly between the two departments.

“Mr. Pitts thought this program would be great to help them out with tight budgets. We’re asking for our city and churches to help continue helping this program out,” Glenn said. “The police and fire departments are the only ones who can use this money.”

Requests are made by the departments to City Council’s Safety Service Committee, which Glenn chairs. If the committee gives its blessing, the proposal is sent before the entire City Council.

“It’s been a win-win situation for our city and our safety service departments. We’re just hoping that everyone can donate $5 or $10 and send it in,” Glenn said. “This money was available for different things they need that our budget was tight and weren’t in the budget.”
