LIMA ‚?? Though she‚??s in Atlanta now, Lima native Tamara Cantore maintains ties to her hometown and tennis community, and they are both reaching out Sunday to help raise money for cause dear to her heart.
Cantore has Parkinson‚??s Disease, and the Lima Bean tennis group will hold a fundraiser Sunday at Westwood Tennis and Fitness Center for a nonprofit she created, Team Cantore, supporting research.
The Lima Bean Tennis Classic will include tennis from 1 to 3 p.m. at Westwood, 3101 W. Elm St. People can play or watch, organizer Bob Leonard said.
The day also includes a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. at Westwood. People can make donations for Team Cantore at the event, or donate online at www.teamcantore.org.
Cantore‚??s family helped start and run Orchard Hill Tennis Club, Lima‚??s first indoor tennis facility, and she and her family have remained involved in tennis, Leonard said.
The Lima Bean group has an annual get-together in the state, bringing people with ties to Lima tennis back together. The group decided to have the 17th annual event this year in Lima and make it a fundraiser, Leonard said.
Jeff Davis, Westwood‚??s new pro, will be part of the day, as will Ron Dredge, who had been the pro at Orchard Hills and ended up purchasing the club.
‚??It‚??s going to be a really informal, fun day,‚?Ě Leonard said. ‚??It‚??s just one thing we felt we could do to help. It‚??s a fun day of playing tennis with old buddies and joining some hecklers. We‚??ll follow with sharing some tall tennis tales, refreshments and sharing tennis history, for a good cause.‚?Ě
