LIMA ‚?? City police officer Dave Vastano and his wife, Deb Vastano, have been married 35 years and they‚??ve shared a passion for safety.

The couple are teaming to instruct the Lima Police Rape Aggression Defense Women‚??s Self Defense Education Program. The free course will be held four times in the next year, beginning in September, the city announced Wednesday.

Women and girls age 13 and older gain self-confidence, learn how to avoid risks and practice personal safety skills to fight off an attacker. The husband-wife pairing as teachers should help women feel comfortable during sensitive topics, the Vastanos said.

‚??Our moms, aunts, sisters and friends are precious to us,‚?Ě Dave Vastano said. ‚??We want them to defend themselves, just as we teach kids to do.‚?Ě

The RAD course spans five Saturdays at Lima Community Church. The first begins Sept. 11. Other classes begin in October, January and March. The course is free, but participants are welcome to make donations to the Lima Safety Services Fund.
