ADA - A male student was rescued from the bottom of a pool at Ohio Northern University on Wednesday night.

The student, whose name is not being released, was swimming at the ONU Sports Center Natatorium around approximately 9:30 p.m. during recreational pool hours, said Amy Prigge, ONU interim director of communications and marketing.

Prigge said the student was saved by a certified ONU lifeguard on duty with the help of another pool patron and immediately called 911.

Ada-Liberty EMS transported the man to a Lima-area hospital, Prigge said. She said the student’s family has not released additional information regarding his condition.

According to police scanner traffic Wednesday night, he was pulled from the pool with a “slight pulse,” and a campus police officer confirmed he was responsive.

“Ohio Northern University expresses deep concern for the health and well-being of our student and hopes for a fully recovery,” she said. “The university appreciates the quick responses of the lifeguard on duty, ONU students and the Ada-Liberty EMS.”
