LIMA - The trial date for a man charged with murder over the death of a man in a robbery has been pushed back.

Charles E. McGuire Jr., 30, is now scheduled to stand trial July 22 on the charges of murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery. He has a final pretrial scheduled for June 25 in Allen County Common Pleas Court.

McGuire’s attorney, Joe Benavidez, told the judge he needs more time to prepare for trial.

McGuire is charged over the Dec. 27 fatal stabbing of James E. Gipson, 29. McGuire did not stab Gipson but he allegedly sent him into a house to collect a debt in exchange for having a debt forgiven, police said.

Gipson threatened the family with a crowbar. He was stabbed during the fight, which authorities said was an act of self defense.

Prosecutor Juergen Waldick said Ohio law allows McGuire to be charged as if he personally killed Gipson.
