OTTAWA — The Y is now a true Y. The grand opening for the Putnam County YMCA’s gymnasium was held Saturday.“It took a lot of sweat and a lot of work from a lot of people to make this a reality,” said Steve Tomboni, director of the Putnam County YMCA.Tomboni said this project was three years in the making and required a lot of volunteer effort and contributions to bring the gym to reality. The final cost for the new gym was just under $500,000, according to Tomboni.“We were fortunate to have Tom Giesken act as our own volunteer general contractor,” he said. “By doing it this way we saved about $500,000.”Tom Giesken, volunteer general contractor for the gym, said that the Y has saved thousands of dollars by doing the project themselves as well as assuring total Putnam County participation of sub-contractors on the project.“It has been a long road but we’ve finally have a full facility to serve the residents of Putnam County,” Giesken said. The new gym is a regulation-size basketball court with an extra side space. The gym is just less than 7,000 square feet. Construction on the project began in late 2006.Tomboni expressed his appreciation for the tremendous financial support provided by Pro-Tec and Iams Division of Procter & Gamble. Tomboni said Pro-Tec launched the fundraiser campaign by making an initial gift of $75,000.Sponsorship opportunities are still available.“This gym is a plus because now our membership will have a place for kids to play with their parents. Also, we can now host basketball and volleyball games.”Starting March 8, there will be a new family gym and swim time from 8 to 11 a.m. for YMCA families. The gym provides three basketball courts, three volleyball courts and will serve as a location for larger aerobics classes and larger dance classes like Zumba. A family Zumba class is scheduled for Saturday mornings.
