LIMA — A man was convicted Monday of six rape charges for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 10.
William Purdy, 38, could face a maximum sentence of life in prison when he is sentenced Nov. 14. Judge Richard Warren of Allen County Common Pleas Court found him guilty of the six rape charges during a trial to the court.
Assistant Allen County Prosecutor Terri Kohlrieser said two witnesses, a former girlfriend to Purdy and the child he raped, both came forward. She said the girlfriend, Trisha Steele, who now is a co-defendant, had everything to lose but still testified.
Steele has pleaded guilty to rape and is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 1.
Purdy’s attorney, Keith Schierloh, said the young victim was a proved liar. He said her testimony at the trial could not be trusted.
Schierloh also said Steele had every reason to lie. She lied to cut a deal with the prosecution, he said.
The crimes took place between 2003 and 2005, when the victim was between the ages of 5 and 7, Kohlrieser said.
Warren scheduled sentencing for next month to give himself and the attorneys in the case enough time to research the law because of new changes in sentencing statutes. The big issue he said is whether Purdy would be eligible for parole.
