LIMA — The 18-year-old man who crashed his car into the Sharon Dairy King early Monday morning might have done so in an attempt to commit suicide.

Jonathan Michael Taylor drove his Buick almost completely through the back of the Elm Street ice cream shop after 2 a.m. Monday, taking a guardrail with him. He told police at the scene that he was driving as quickly as 90 mph, and that he was doing so intentionally. Taylor was trapped inside his car for nearly an hour before rescue workers could free him.

“He indicated to officers that this was no accident, that he intentionally had run into the building,” said Sgt. Kevin Litsey of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash scene was so devastating that the car couldn’t be seen right away.

“Because of the extensive damage, the vehicle wasn’t at first visible to officers,” Litsey said.

Taylor was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center on Monday for non-life-threatening injuries.

Litsey said Taylor will likely be facing vandalism charges and perhaps reckless endangerment, at the very least, pending a full investigation. A blood sample was also drawn to check toxicology levels. Retrieving the results of those tests may take several weeks.

No one was inside Sharon Dairy King at the time of the crash, but the building is considered a total loss, with only a few handpainted signs that could be retrieved. Dairy King Owner Tim Swick plans to rebuild at the same location.
