LIMA —A paralegal and bank officer, Rachael Gilroy said she is ready to use both work experiences in her new job as Allen County treasurer.

“I was ready for a new challenge, and I like to serve people, and just combining my financial background with my legal background and being able to serve the citizens of Allen County seemed like a new great experience,” Gilroy said of her interest in the position.

Gilroy, of Spencerville, was sworn in Wednesday by 3rd District Court of Appeals Judge John Willamowski. The Allen County Republican Party appointed Gilroy to the seat Monday.

“I am very excited to be in this position, and I can’t wait to get started,” Gilroy said to family, friends and co-workers attending the swearing-in ceremony. Gilroy’s husband, Kevin, stood with her while her three daughters watched. Another daughter watched via a cell phone from college.

The appointment was needed because the party appointed Jim Link, who had served as treasurer, to Lima Municipal Court Clerk when former Clerk Ben Diepenbrock retired. Gilroy said she will run for the treasurer seat in the 2014 general election.

Gilroy has nearly 20 years in financial service in the county. She was a trust administrator with Huntington Bank. She served on the Spencerville school board for five years, resigning Tuesday to take her new position. Gilroy served as school board president last year.

Gilroy said she hopes to settle into her office and spend time looking for needed changes. After Willamowski swore her in Wednesday, Gilroy administered the oath of office to her staff.

“There is a great staff already in place,” she said. “My first priority is to meet with my staff and get a solid understanding of the direction the office is going and meet with the auditor and former treasurer and set our goals for the future.”

Gilroy said the biggest challenges facing the office include getting the best interest income offthe funds deposited for the county and collecting funds that are due to the county.
