PUTNAM COUNTY — Ohio Rep. Robert Sprague (R-Findlay) said he is impressed with the number of people who took time to complete a public survey to get input on how the flooding issue affects residents throughout the region.“We had 840 responses,” Sprague said. “This is great that this number of people were willing to weigh in on their opinions. This will allow us to take the tally of these opinions and let the peoples’ voice be heard to state wide officials.”Monday was the cut-off date for the survey. Sprague said the high number of people who responded both by mail and online has meant it is taking longer than expected to tally the results.Sprague expects the results to be completed early next week.Sprague, Ohio Sen. Cliff Hite (R-Findlay) and Ohio Rep. Lynn Wachtmann (R-Napoleon), held a news conference Jan. 30 at Bindel’s Appliance in Findlay to announce the launch of the survey. Bindel’s suffered flooding in 2007 that ruined everything in the store’s basement. The legislators wanted input on how the flooding issue affects residents throughout the region. They intend to use the results of the survey as they lobby the state for $6 million in funding originally earmarked for the effort that fell away as the state faced a budget crunch. The state originally committed $3 million in three consecutive biannual budgets, but only the first $3 million was appropriated.Sprague is leading the effort to secure the $6 million through general or specific funding. He said there is a specific fund in the new budget that could go to the effort. The original funding got the ball rolling and led the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin studying the problem.“These results will give us the opportunity at the state level to let them know there is still public commitment to this project,” Sprague said. He said the survey, which asked about personal and business property damages, also asked if local, state and federal governments should be accountable for solving the problem.“We received a lot of great comments,” Sprague said.
