LIMA — A housing community on Lima’s south side is getting a makeover.
Martin Estates, along Reese Avenue at Eighth Street, are in the midst of an interior and exterior overhaul, according to Jon Veard, owner of United Property Management Co. of Lorain, which manages the apartments.
“We’re adding little porches over each of the entranceways, making it a little easier for folks to sit out in the summertime and enjoy the patios,” Veard said. “We’re repairing the siding, repainting the exterior, putting all new roofs on.”
Eight units are also being fully renovated to join the 93 units that have already undergone the interior transformation, Veard said.
“It’s going to really transform the place,” Veard said.
The company has invested more than $500,000 during the past several years on interior renovations, Veard said. Couple that with the more than $384,000 invested in the exterior upgrades and it’s a significant investment, 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn said.
“The guy that owns the property putting so much money in the area we were so excited about it. This is a win-win situation for the city of Lima and the 6th Ward,” Glenn said. “This is something that people have called about saying it’s great they’ve invested money, invested in the area. We want to see more money invested in the area. This is an exciting moment today seeing them making a difference in the area.”
Veard said originally plans were to have the exterior renovations and landscaping completed by the end of the month. A series of other projects and weather delays will push the renovation completion timeline back to closer to the first of the year with the landscaping work not scheduled for completion until spring, he said.
“It’s going to be nice,” he said.
