LIMA - Police arrested several people Sunday in an early-morning drug raid at a house they say serves as an after-hours gathering place.

Police would not reveal the number of arrests made or the names of those arrested in the raid at 975 St. Johns Ave.

Lima Police Department has had numerous complaints in the area of St. Johns Avenue and Second Street. The complaints have been sporadic, Lt. Jim Baker said.

"One weekend there will be a significant amount of people there and another weekend no one is there," Baker said.

But that has changed, unfortunately for the worse lately, Baker said.

"They have been getting noticeably worse," he said.

Baker said the source of the trouble seemed to be the house at 975 St. Johns Ave., where crowds gather, loud music is played and alcohol is served illegally,

"I think it's just a gathering place after the bars close and when you have alcohol and guns together you got problems," Baker said.

There is not a permit at the house to sell alcohol, Baker said.

According to the Allen County Auditor's Web site, the home is owned by Jospeh Turner.

A neighbor in the area said she has seen more than 200 people, mostly younger in their 20s and 30s, at the home at times.

The home used to be a place where Turner and other older people who had retired from General Motors in Defiance would hang out and drink, the neighbor said.

The retirees never caused problems and were quiet. Turner, however, is in Florida and his nephew is using the house and throwing parties, the neighbor said.

Last weekend a man was shot in the area. Akil Abdullah, 43, of Lima, was shot about 4 a.m. Jan. 18, police reported. Abdullah was shot when someone was trying to rob him, Baker said. Police said he was at the home used for after-hours parties, Baker said.

Police have a suspect in Abdullah's shooting but would not release a name Sunday, Baker said.
