LIMA — A retired city worker and local township police chief is entering the political realm.

Douglas Vermillion, Marion Township police chief, filed petitions Wednesday to run for Lima mayor.

“I just think we need to change the status quo. I think a new face that’s not been in politics is a way to start,” Vermillion said. “I want to bring back businesses to our community so we can get our people back to work and hopefully they can realize the American dream of owning their own home and having a career and a good, safe place to raise a family.”

It is the first run for elected office for Vermillion.

Lima Mayor David Berger, the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history, is the only other candidate to file petitions in the race. Berger, who first took office in 1989, has said even after six terms in office the job still excites him.

“If I was bored, I would simply move on. I’m not bored,” Berger said in January after being the first candidate to file. “Every day I get up, there are new challenges I have to think about, I have to study, I have to engage with people. All of that kind of work, many balls in the air all the time, really is a challenge that I enjoy.”

In addition to the mayoral seat, the odd-numbered city council seats are on the ballot this year.

One candidate filed for each of the four council seats.

In the 1st Ward, incumbent Kurt Neeper previously announced he would not seek reelection. Todd Gordon, an air quality technician at the prison who teaches part-time at Apollo Career Center, filed to succeed Neeper. It is Gordon’s second attempt at the seat. In 2005, Gordon ran against Ray Magnus, owner of Ray’s Place, for the seat, losing 535 to 427.

Third Ward Councilor Jesse Lowe and 5th Ward Councilor Teresa Adams both have filed for reelection.

Seventh Ward Councilor Paige Townsend will not seek reelection. Current Lima school board member C. Ann Miles has filed for the 7th Ward seat.
