LIMA — The man accused of shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend fought off tears before breaking down when he left the courtroom during his bond hearing Friday.

Bond was set at $1 million for Timothy Brown, 48. He is charged with murder in Wednesday’s slaying of 32-year-old Valeda Thomas at 218 W. Murphy St.

Brown told Judge William Lauber he did not have money to hire an attorney. Lauber said he would appoint an attorney for Brown’s preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 12 before Lima Municipal Magistrate David Cheney.

Thomas had a protection order against Brown. Police said the shooting may have resulted from a domestic dispute. Thomas died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
