LIMA — A man accused of stabbing a police sergeant has been indicted on the charge of felonious assault.
The charge against James Heffner is a first-degree felony that carries up to 11 years in prison. Heffner is being held on a $500,000 bond.
Heffner, 41, of 3827 Meadowview Drive, visited the Lima Police Department on March 27. He summoned two officers outside. When the officers walked out the door, he charged them and stabbed Sgt. Dave Gillispie in the side of the head with a screwdriver.
Gillispie drew his gun and fired, striking Heffner twice. A detective said Heffner was suicidal. Gillispie was treated for the wound at St. Rita’s Medical Center.
