LIMA — A Canton company was the apparent low bidder for the second phase of the three-phase reconstruction of Interstate 75 through Allen County, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Friday.

Beaver Excavating submitted a bid of slightly more than $63 million for the project. The second phase of the project is the reconstruction of the interstate lanes from Fourth Street to just north of state Route 81. The project includes reconstruction of the interchanges with state Route 81 and state Route 117/309 along with a safety upgrade to state Route 309 east of the interstate.

Kirk Slusher, ODOT District 1 deputy director, said the contract won’t be officially awarded for about a month pending a review of the bid documents.

“Once the contract is officially awarded, we will begin working with the contractor to develop a schedule of when the various components of work will take place,” Slusher said.

The first phase of the project, which included the reconstruction of the Fourth Street and Reservoir Road bridges over the interstate, took place last year. Both bridges were reopened to traffic last fall. Finishing touches to those projects are set for spring.

Slusher said ODOT will hold a public meeting prior to this year’s phase getting underway to let motorists know more about what they can expect. A date and time for the meeting has yet to be set, he said.

“We’ll share as much as we can at that time regarding how the contractor plans to sequence the major aspects of the project,” Slusher said.

Construction is set to begin in the spring.

A third phase for the project, consisting of reconstruction of the interstate from the Auglaize County line to Fourth Street, will begin in 2014. The third phase will include reconstruction of the Breese Road and state Route 65 interchanges as well as the replacement of the Hanthorn and McClain road bridges.
