OTTAWA — Leipsic resident Jaimie Garcia was given a life sentence for rape and an additional sentence of 60 years in jail for twelve counts of sexual imposition Monday morning in Putnam County Common Pleas Court. Judge Randall Basinger also said he would recommend that parole not be considered.Garcia, 41, was found guilty by a jury last Friday of one count of rape of a victim under the age of ten, a first degree offense, and 12 counts of sexual imposition, all third-degree felonies. Basinger also ordered Garcia be registered as a Tier III sex offender for the remainder of his life, the most serious classification under federal law.“Justice has been done in Putnam County,” said Tammy Baker, custodian grandmother of three of the victims.“A piece of their childhood is gone,” her husband Ted Baker, custodian grandfather said. “They will have to live with what has happened all their lives.”Assistant prosecutor Todd Schroeder, requested the maximum sentence for Garcia based on “the clear negative impact the victims will have on the remainder of their lives.”Referring to the multiple offenses with numerous victims Garcia had over 8 years with victims’ 5 to 10 years old, Judge Basinger said he did not believe the passage of time would reduce the risk to these victims to any acceptable level that release of defendant be considered. Basinger said the defendant used threats to cover up his acts.He also said the defendant used a family relationship with the victims to facilitate these crimes“The offender poses the most significant risk of committing future crimes for the reason that the offenses have gone on for a period of at least 8 years and have been conducted on a regular basis when any opportunity arose,” Judge Basinger said.“I now feel there is justice in Putnam County,” Ted Baker said. “My biggest regret is allowing these children to pay the visits to this family and that this occurred without our knowing.”
