LIMA ó The Lima school board officially hired Doug Kent on Tuesday as principal of Lima Senior High School.
Superintendent Jill Ackerman announced a few weeks ago she would recommend Kent to head Lima Senior when it moves from three small schools to one next school year. Kent, currently principal of the Performance Based School, was one of 11 to apply for the position. He was the only internal candidate.
Kent has been with Lima schools since 1992, holding various positions, including assistant basketball coach, assistant principal, academic adviser, director of adult education and general equivalency diploma programs, and head administrator at the Lima Alternative High School. He became a small school leader in 2004.
The board also approved Tuesday cutting Kentís current position, along with School of Multiple Intelligences Principal Alison Van Gorder and Progressive Academy dean of students Tyson Goings. They will remain the rest of this school year.
The dean of students position is funded by a School Improvement Grant that ends this school year. The Progressive Academy has had an interim principal for the past few months. There are currently two assistant principals at the high school, and Ackerman plans to hire another soon.
