LIMA — Bond was set at $500,000 on Thursday for a man charged with attacking a police officer with a screwdriver last week.

John Heffner, 41, made his first court appearance at a bond hearing at Lima Municipal Court. Judge RicKard Workman scheduled a preliminary hearing for Tuesday.

Heffner is charged with felonious assault with a deadly weapon, a first-degree felony. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 11 years in prison.

Heffner was released from the hospital Tuesday evening and taken to Allen County Jail, where he remains. He was recovering from two gunshot wounds after the officer shot him in self defense.

Heffner was shot twice during the incident March 27 outside the front entrance of the Lima Police Department.

Police said Heffner was suicidal and wanted to use an encounter with an officer to end his life, a phenomenon known as “suicide by cop.”

Lima Police Detective Kent Miller said in court Heffner stated during an interview he still is not sure whether he wants to live.

How the shooting happened

Heffner showed at the Lima Police Department and summoned two officers outside. When they opened the door, he charged them from the street, about 40-feet away. Heffner closed quickly on them enough to stab Sgt. Dave Gillispie in the head with a screwdriver before Gillispie could stop him with his gun. Heffner also was holding a long stick, police said.

Gillispie was slashed across the side of his head and treated for the wound. He was released that evening. He is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is standard procedure anytime an officer shoots someone.
