Ottawa teen wins competition; tours Washington

OTTAWA — Olivia Velasquez, of Ottawa, was among 40 high school winners throughout Ohio and West Virginia who visited Washington. D.C.. as part of Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives Inc.’s Youth Tour to the nation’s capital. She is the daughter of Rick and Amy Velasquez.

The students were awarded the tour in a scholastic competition sponsored by Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative Inc. of North Baltimore. As part of their tour of Washington, the students met with members of their congressional delegation, visited Arlington National Cemetery and attended a performance at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

During this trip, Olivia was selected by her fellow students to represent Ohio on the Youth Leadership Council and will return to Washington, D.C., in late July for leadership training.

Local artist paints for Hollywood

LIMA — Ruth Ann Sturgill, of Lima, painted signs for the new American Frontier Production site in Easton, Kan.

“I just happen to be friends with the gentleman that owns the company,” Sturgill said. “We were introduced by another artist.

“This site is 85 acres that have never been tilled, a stimulation overload. If you are a nature person it is incredible,” she added.

Sturgill hand-painted signs for the dry goods store, The Gilded Lady Saloon, Hotel DeShon, the Overland Freight Co. and the livery. She worked from sunup until sundown Mondays through Thursdays to complete the signs for the grand opening. Wes Studi, best known for his role as Geronimo, and most recently had a major role in the movie, "Avatar," was in Easton for the grand opening photo shoot.

When Hollywood or other film crews are not using the set, it will be used for specific artists and photographers of Western genre.

“I will probably be returning back there. They are telling me they need a sign for this and a sign for that, so it looks like before too long I will be returning to paint signs. I am really looking forward to it,” she added.

Car show nets money for charities

LIMA — The Charity Car Show presented checks of $3,000 to Lima Police Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and Needy Children’s Christmas. Organizers for the car show are Andy Maravola and John Waller.

The show, which was held last weekend, had 160 participants.

Brenda Wheeler, of Defiance, took the Best of Show award with her 1936 Ford Cabriolet. The Best of Show paid a cash award of $500. She graciously donated $200 back to the car show. This was the second car show she had attended with her car.

“The weather didn’t cooperate with us,” Maravola said. “We were hoping for more cars, but you can’t control the weather. We were very happy to be able to donate this money to these charities,” he added.
