LIMA — As the Lima Public Library board of trustees met for its regular meeting Tuesday, members watched out the second-floor windows to see scraps falling from the sky. No worries, just a roof under construction. The roof is nearly complete, and should be finished within the week if the weather holds, library Director Gary Fraser said. The construction is part of a major energy-saving capital project at the library being funded with those savings. In April, the Lima Public Library approved a $1.5 million contract for significant roof repairs, replacements of the lighting, heating and cooling systems, and other energy upgrades. The board is working with Johnson Controls and using a process called performance contracting, which means Johnson guarantees the board can use savings generated by energy improvements to finance the work. If the savings don’t cover the bill, Johnson writes a check. The library is able to do all of the work needed because the Lima Library Association is helping fund the work. Regular patrons at the library will notice changes inside as well. Decades-old blinds and curtains are gone, replaced with tinted windows. The windows keep the heat in during winter and keep the cool in during summer.Construction crews also removed the massive boiler, original to the building from 1959, and is replacing it with a new energy-efficient model and have made improvements to the main entrance’s revolving doors. You can comment on this story at www.limaohio.com.
