LIMA — Words spoken by Devin Culverson’s attorney Wednesday sounded like an echo heard day after day, year after year in the courtroom.

Blame the drugs. Drugs led Culverson to shoot at another man.

The 20-year-old Culverson shot at a man on a bicycle Sept. 24 at the intersection of Catalpa Avenue and South Sugar Street, near Unity Elementary School. He was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday.

Judge Jeffrey Reed asked Culverson why he shot at Allante Johnson. Besides the marijuana use, Culverson didn’t have a good answer. He also said he didn’t know why he had a gun.

“The people I was hanging out with. The wrong crowd,” Culverson said.

Johnson was grazed by the bullet. Culverson said he didn’t have any problems with Johnson, but a prosecutor said there was a feud with Johnson and others in the car with Culverson.

Reed read over Culverson’s record as a child, which includes another gun crime in 2009.

“There you have it,” Reed said. “Here you go, four years out of your life.”

King had tried to talk the judge into a lesser sentence, even probation. He said Culverson has a young daughter and a lot of support from family and friends to keep him on the right path.

King said Culverson was planning to go to college to get a degree in business so he could someday open his own barbershop. He said that shows someone more mature than others who come through the court.

Culverson was using marijuana three to four times a day, King said.

“He has been faced with the reality of what role marijuana plays in his life,” King said. “Marijuana has led him here.”

King also acknowledges the shooting could have been a lot more serious had the bullet connected squarely with Johnson.

“This one could have had extremely severe consequences,” King said.
