LIMA — A move took a bad turn Sunday night when a mattress fell from the top of a vehicle, causing an accident and sending one to the hospital.

The Lima post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that Brittany Griffin, 23, of Lima, was driving west on Spencerville Road just east of Spencerville with a mattress on top of her sport utility vehicle.

The mattress fell from the SUV and struck another vehicle driven by Amanda Sunderland, 23, of Spencerville. She was driving behind Griffin. Sunderland traveled off the left side of the road and rolled into a ditch. The accident occurred just after 10 p.m.

Sgt. Bob Burd said the mattress fell on the hood and hit the windshield. When it came down off the hood, the mattress got wrapped up in the front tire and broke the tie rod.

“When a tie rod breaks, you lose control of that side of the car,” Burd said.

Sunderland was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The mattress belonged to the vehicle in front of Griffin. She was helping that person move. Burd said they had gotten lost and had not meant to be that far out of Lima.

Griffin will be cited for an unsecured load. The mattress was tied with weak string that shouldn’t have been used in the first place, Burd said. Drivers are permitted to carry things like a mattress on top of vehicles as long as they are secure.
