LIMA — Officers shot and used a stun gun on a disgruntled man at the police station after he stabbed a Lima Police officer in the head with an unknown object Wednesday evening.

Lima Police Maj. Anthony Swygart said the man had been calling local police stations, telling them he wanted to take his own life. Around 6:20 p.m., the man arrived at Lima Police station on West Market Street.

“He was going to go inside and make them shoot him,” Swygart said.

The man approached the entrance of the police station with an unknown weapon. According to police radio traffic, the stabber was armed with a screwdriver.

The attacker stabbed one of the police officers in the side of the head with an unknown object, prompting one officer to shoot the man in self-defense. The names of the man and the officers have not yet been released; the two injured were taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center.

The injured officer appeared to have non life-threatening injuries.

“It looks like he’s going to be OK,” said Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin. “We are still in the process of gathering a lot of facts.”

The man who attacked the officer was shot twice, Martin said. He was being taken into surgery Wednesday night

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and Lima Police officers stood Wednesday evening behind yellow caution tape on West Market Street. From a distance, blood appeared to be smeared on the police station steps.

Witness Beth Beyke stood in front of the Lima Municipal Center, shaking her head. A Master Maintenance employee, she was cleaning the mayor’s office when she saw the whole scene unfold from the window.

“He ran up that ramp, and that cop shot him,” Beyke said. “He was attacking them.”
