After closing their season with a 3-20 record, the Lady Dukes varsity basketball team must now bid goodbye to three seniors.

Elizabeth Bowman, Ala Hardoby, and Karly Rollin have finished their high school careers.

Wellington coach Chris Reutepohler said the three seniors should be judged by their actions instead of wins and losses.

“I couldn’t ask for a better trio of seniors,” he said. “None of them felt they were entitled because they were seniors. They worked just as hard as anybody on the team. They spent time helping the underclassmen. I wish we could have won more games for them because they deserved it.

“A lot of the success we have moving forward will be because of those three young ladies.”

All three girls shared their thoughts after last week’s postseason loss to top-seeded Elyria Catholic.

“It’s sad that the season is over but it’s been a fun year,” said Bowman, a two-year letter winner. “I think we grew as a team and the players coming back next year have a chance to be really good.”

“This is my only sport so it’s difficult realizing that I’m done playing,” said Hardoby, who spent two years on varsity. “I hope that next year’s seniors pick up where we left off and help the underclassmen. They need to encourage the younger players and treat them like family.”

“None of us wanted to be viewed as mean seniors,” said Rollin, a three-year letter winner. “We wanted to show the younger players that there is a responsibility to treat everyone equally. We were all in this together. Regardless of wins and losses, we grew as a team and that’s what’s important.

“I’m very proud to have played with this group of girls and I’m going to miss them.”
