The organizer of a new half-marathon and triathlon recently gave Delaware City Council some details about the events.
Delaware County resident Craig Thompson told Council the New Moon Half & Quarter Marathon will take place at 6 p.m. May 31, starting and finishing on North Sandusky Street between William Street and Central Avenue.
“It’s an evening event, which makes it unique,” Thompson said.
The event beneficiary is the American Lung Association of Central Ohio.
A half-marathon is 13.1 miles in length; a quarter-marathon is 6.55 miles. The event will end at 10 p.m.
“This is a wonderful showcase for the city,” Thompson said. Among the places showcased will be the downtown, parks, Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware Hayes High School, Delaware County Fairgrounds, trails, schools, businesses, restaurants, and merchants, and the community.
He said more than 200 people have signed up to compete, and he expects 750 to 1,000 runners and walkers age 13 and older. Thompson is seeking 200 volunteers to put on the event.
In addition to the run, there is a post‐event Celebration in partnership with Main Street Delaware with a sidewalk festival, live music and activities.
“Without the great support, creativity, dedication and enthusiasm of the Special Events Board, the City Manager’s Office, Chief of Police and his leadership team, and the merchants of Main Street Delaware volunteers, this exciting new event would not have been able to happen,” Thompson said in a statement.
“I’m glad we’re finally able to make a match,” said City Manager Tom Homan after Thompson’s presentation.
Thompson also said he is putting on the inaugural MingoMan Triathlon on Aug. 17. He said that Mingo Park is a transition point for the triathlon, hence the name.
The swimming portion will begin in Delaware State Park, bicycling will take place on routes 23, 229 and 42, down to Mingo Park and then running through the streets of Delaware.
