LIMA — The Swedish pop group ABBA dominated the charts in the late 1970s and early 1980s with songs like “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance On Me.” Now audiences at Veterans Memorial Civic Center can enjoy this timeless music today in the hit musical “Mamma Mia!”
This show has been seen by more than 54 million people worldwide and has grossed over $2 billion at the box office.
“When you look at the season, you look at a wide variety of show types, and usually there is one big headliner, and this is our Broadway season’s headliner,” Civic Center CEO Cynthia Wood said.
Set against the backdrop of a beautiful Greek island, the musical chronicles a woman’s attempt to find her biological father, integrating the familiar music of ABBA througout. This successful formula for a musical has now been seen in over 400 major cities worldwide since it first opened in London in 1999, faster than any other musical in history. This production is part of the North American tour, featuring 260 performances nationwide.
According to Wood, a wide variety of patrons have purchased tickets to this show.
“We have a lot of groups coming in,” she said. “All ages are coming in to buy. There are people coming for a ladies night out or moms bringing daughters.”
Wood also noted that tickets are selling out very fast and that anyone wishing to get a last-minute ticket will want to act quickly.
“We’re getting down to the wire,” she said. “We have 89 tickets available as of Wednesday.”
