LIMA — It’s that time of year again when comics reign supreme in Lima’s downtown.
Alter Ego Comics in downtown Lima will host Free Comic Book Day beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and running until 4 p.m.
“The biggest attraction is the free comic books,” store owner Marc Bowker said. “We’ve got over 30 different titles that people can choose from. We do limit to four different comics per person.”
Comic book fans will have plenty to see at this event.
“We have characters in costume every year, so this year, we’ll have Captain America, Spiderman, Thor, Batgirl and a female Robin,” Bowker said. “We always encourage people to come out in costume.”
Alter Ego will have several other promotions in store during the event, including $1 comics and the chance to win gift cards. In addition, Bowker is also working this year to help those less fortunate.
“For the first time this year, we’ll be doing a benefit auction for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” he said. “We’ve got some cool stuff like Star Wars statues, signed comics and limited edition pieces available. We’re working with 92.1 The Frog and they’ll be bringing in some concert tickets, as well.”
Free Comic Book Day has grown into a major downtown event, and this year will be no exception.
“We’ve got some of our downtown neighbors participating,” Bowker said. “Fat Cat Diner will be giving away free Superman ice cream, the Met will have some superhero drink specials and Nitza’s is having a superhero symbol contest where people who guess the symbol will be entered to win a free gift card. Beauty by Jill, our new neighbor, will do superhero face painting. The Meeting Place on Market will have some superhero drink specials, as well as free Captain America cocoa for kids who come in costume.”
Bowker is excited to see how Free Comic Book Day continues to grow.
“We had about 1,300 people last year. It keeps growing, and we hope to see that number grow this year,” he said. “We just want to get the message out that comics are cool.”
