The Rev. Mike Cheek became the new Lead Pastor at Highpoint Nazarene Church, 795 Pollock Road, in December.

He previously served as Associate Pastor of the Sandusky Community Church of the Nazarene, his home church. Prior to this position he worked at Mount Vernon Nazarene University from 2000-2008, most recently as Enrollment Counselor/Chaplain at the Mansfield site of MVNU. He also worked as Director of Major Gifts and Grants and Director of Alumni Relations while at MVNU.

Cheek was called to preach while serving as Youth Pastor and Associate Pastor at Marley Park Church of the Nazarene in Glen Burnie, Md., from 1987-1994. He was ordained by the Church of the Nazarene’s Washington District in April 1994. Following that ordination he accepted the Senior Pastorate at the Church of the Nazarene in Cardington, and served there until moving to MVNU in 2000.

Mike graduated from Margaretta High School in Castalia, Ohio, in 1977. He received a B.A. in Physical Education from MVNU in 1982 and a Master of Ministry from MVNU in 1998. He also graduated with a M.A. in Coaching Behavior from Miami (Ohio) University in 1986.

Mike married Janis Wright from Willoughby, Ohio, in August 1983, whom he met at college. They have 3 children; Courtney (25) married to Abe Williams who live in Winfield, W.Va., Drew (24) and Tyler (22). On Valentine’s Day 2013, Courtney and Abe gave Mike and Janis their first grandchild, Ava Marie.

Mike enjoys sports, reading, music, roller coasters, and travel. Spending time one on one with Janis ranks number one on this list.

“In my few short months of living and pastoring in Delaware I have fallen in love with this beautiful city,” he said. “I am excited to become an active part of the life of Delaware; meeting people, helping those who are hurting, praying for needs, supporting the schools, and enjoying all the opportunities for recreation and education that are in the central Ohio region.”

“The people at Highpoint have very warmly welcomed Janis and me. They are like family already. We desire to come together to make a difference in Delaware for the kingdom of God. We believe there are great days ahead and are so excited to see what God wants to do in our midst.”
