Renaming the stadium from Lima Stadium to Spartan Stadium makes no sense as it pertains to this community. It is a stadium site that should and has been a showplace for many Lima schools, including LCC.
The Lima Stadium was for many decades where Lima Central High School and Lima South High Schools played their games and filled all the stadium seats with their supporters. The Thanksgiving games between Central and South brought forth more excitement and memories than all the turkeys on all the holiday tables. People still talk about those games.
This move to rename the stadium reminds me of the mindless change of the names of Lima’s elementary schools when the new buildings were erected. Changing Horace Mann to Heritage, Lincoln to Liberty, etc. was not only ridiculous but sad. It took from Lima and the children the respect we had shown our American forefathers and heroes. So now the stadium is rebuilt and that name changes too?
Why does Lima keep trying to ignore and forget a memorable past? Lima’s children and citizens should be reminded of that.
I’m beginning to believe that if it wasn’t for our Allen County Museum, our ties and remembrance of Lima’s proud history would be completely lost.
