On Monday, the Spencerville Area Veterans Memorial Park Committee will be having a candlelight vigil to remember America's war dead and wounded from 1775 through 2013. Americans have lost their lives in some 85 wars and assorted military actions in the past 238 years. Most of the casualties occurred in a dozen or so major wars, but that does not lessen the sacrifice of those killed in the numerous and mostly forgotten minor expeditions in the far corners of the globe. Whenever any American in uniform is killed by hostile enemy action, it is meaningful, and that loss must be remembered and forever recognized.
The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. People from all around this area are welcome to attend this very special Veterans Day Program. Please bring a candle if you have one. If not, a candle will be provided by the Veterans Park Committee.
On Wednesday, Spencerville Veterans will have a Veterans Day program for Veterans in Van Crest Nursing Home in Delphos at 10 a.m., and Roselawn Nursing Home in Spencerville at 1 p.m. We never will forget these veterans in our nursing homes just because they are confined and can't get out to a Veterans Day program. The speaker for these nursing home programs will be Rick Conaway, American Legion Commander of Post 96 in Lima. Rick is a past District 2 American Legion Commander.
