On May 22, Bill Demoss wrote a letter trashing St. Rose parish. The tone was set when he stated that at the 4 p.m. Mass we “supposedly” worshiped God. I have no idea if his letter was written in ignorance or malice. The Church of Jesus Christ has been worshiping God for more than 2,000 years.
His apparent ignorance of Scripture leads him to believe that drinking, dancing, and gambling are evil in and of themselves. Jesus made a lot of wine at a wedding party at Cana. His mom let him know they were out, so reluctantly at first, he changed water into much fine wine. The party was able to go on for a few more days. Dancing and drinking to celebrate traditional marriage lasted more than a week at this time.
When it came time to appoint someone to replace Judas as an apostle, Mathias was chosen by casting lots. A gamble, but through prayer, it worked out. The state of Ohio and others seem to think gambling is not evil in itself.
The St. Rose festival was a great event to help raise funds for our school. Did some people overeat, drink, gamble. Probably so, because it is open to all and we are all sinners. Maybe Demoss ought to come over next year and have some of the best fries, chicken wings, and if so inclined, a cold beer. He could even win up to $5,000 in our big ticket drawing.
G.K. Chesterton once wrote: “wherever the Catholic sun does shine will be found dance and drink and good red wine.”
Moderation in all things is what I have to learn. Sometimes I fall short. Guess that is why I need a Savior.
