I am aware that Oberlin has had a harsh winter season. My son, Minh Jeffrey, attends Oberlin College, and loves it.

A month ago or so, Minh Jeffrey called me to let me know that the weather had warmed up, and he was wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and sandals, walking across campus to his classes.

Today (April Fool’s Day), it’s 71 degrees with a light rain in Oberlin! In San Francisco, it’s only 50 degrees, and we are having a week-and-a-half streak of rainy weather, mixed with bolts of lightning this morning. This heavy rain is good news, but isn’t quite enough to end the drought here.

Yesterday, as I listened to the downpour of rain in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was reminded of the monsoon season in Saigon, Vietnam, when I was a child.

And as someone who grew up mostly in Michigan, as a fellow Midwesterner I wonder whether the spring crocuses and daffodils have emerged yet in Oberlin.

I send everyone at Oberlin College and the town of Oberlin my greetings and best wishes for a happy spring!
