Father, son conquer law school together
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ADA - Just as many fathers and sons do, Tom and Ryan McLelland have been going round and round with each other for the past three years.
There has been yelling and even some name-calling, but it's all been in the name of pushing each other through law school.
"We're very loud and we love to argue. That's how we kind of learn to understand things," said Ryan, 30.
"We have family discussions a lot and everyone is allowed to give their opinions," Dad added.
The father and son duo, who moved to Lima from Salt Lake City, will graduate today during Ohio Northern University's law commencement.
Tom, who had worked for Utah's corrections department, always wanted to go to law school, but life kept getting in the way.
"My version is he found out I was going to law school and he got really jealous," his son said jokingly. Going to school together had been a joke between the two for several years.
Admitting they can be competitive, the two have kept tabs on their own and the other's grades.
"We are very conscious about our grades and who beats who in which classes. I can tell you which classes he's beat me in," Ryan said, saying his father pushes him to take a certain professor's class that he doesn't do as well in.
Dad, 58, has outdone his son in one class per semester, something that doesn't seem to bother the proud father.
"He has done very well, and he generally beats me," Tom said. "We really do push each other and try to make each other do the best we can. It's nice when you are studying with someone you know is working as hard as you are. ... We've always had a study partner who was right there."
The two moved to Lima with their wives and Ryan's three children. Their families recently returned to Utah, leaving the two to finish up school. Ryan is the second youngest of six children.
Well-known around the law school, their classmates often refer to them as the Greater McLelland and the Lesser McLelland, nicknames given to them by a professor after he figured out they were related.
This will likely not be the end of the study partners. They will return to Utah and begin studying for the July bar exam. They will get results in November, and then hope to start a law practice together. Tom is interested in employment and labor law, while Ryan wants to practice family law.
Tom and Ryan have spent the majority of their time together in the last three years, including being in all the same classes the first year. Neither has any complaints or regrets.
"We always joked about someday doing something together, so it's been kind of fun to be able to spend this much time together," Ryan said. "It is not something you ever really anticipate being able to do, so it's been enjoyable."
