Hancock County landfill settles lawsuit with EPA

FINDLAY — The Hancock County Landfill has settled a lawsuit with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency by agreeing to pay a $27,000 fine for an air pollution control permit violation, the Ohio EPA reported in a written statement.

The landfill was required to have a Title V permit since it was a major air pollution source, but it let its permit expire Aug. 28, 2007. The landfill has applied for a new permit with the U.S. EPA, the statement said.

Landfills are a large source of air pollution given the gases produced as waste decomposes and from dust from the landfill roads, according to the EPA.
