LIMA — A 21-year-old Lima man died early Friday after another vehicle eluding police ran a red light and struck the car in which he was a passenger.
Devontae Williams, 21, of Lima, was transported from the scene of the accident at the intersection at Kibby Street and Central Avenue by emergency squad to St. Rita’s Medical Center. He later died from his injuries there, according to a press release from Major Chip Protsman of the Lima Police Department.
At 12:48 a.m. Friday, an officer from the Lima Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for a suspected criminal offense on Kibby Street at McPheron Avenue. The juvenile driver of the vehicle, who LPD didn’t immediately identify, fled from the officer at a high rate of speed, running a red light at Kibby and Central.
That’s where the vehicle struck the vehicle in which Williams was a passenger.
The juvenile driver is being treated at a local hospital for his injuries. The LPD is working with the prosecutor’s office to determine what criminal charges may be filed.
Protsman had no comment on what suspected offense led to the initial attempt to stop the vehicle, stating that he doubted any information on this case would be released in the near future.
“I don’t think we’ll have any new information to report on this until after the weekend,” he said.
The identity of the juvenile driver was not released.
