Ex-Lima Senior star Simpson to have number retired

Lima Senior will retire former Ohio Mr. Basketball Greg Simpson’s number in a ceremony at the Spartans’ boys basketball game against Elida on Dec.28 at Lima Senior.

The 6-foot, 1-inch guard scored 2,346 points in his career and was named Mr. Basketball as a junior and senior. He wore No. 3.

Simpson was a McDonald’s high school All-American and a Parade Magazine All-American. Lima Senior was Division I state runner-up his senior season.

His 57 points against Toledo Start on Feb. 1, 1992 is a Lima city record, and he has the top seven scoring games in Lima Senior boys basketball history.

He was recruited by many of the top basketball programs in the country before signing with Ohio State. He was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in the 1992-93 season before leaving Ohio State and transferring to West Virginia.

He later played professionally in Europe and Asia.
