VAN WERT - The house fire that killed a Van Wert woman Thursday night has been ruled accidental, Fire Chief Jim Steele said Friday.
The Van Wert Fire Department responded to 1009 Hughes St. at 11:36 p.m. Thursday. The one-story house was heavily damaged. The fire was brought under control in 24 minutes, Steele said.
A 72-year-old woman was found dead inside the home, according to the fire department.
The victim's name has not been released but the home is listed to Wilma Welker in phone directories.
Chief Steele said there was only one person living at the home at the time of the fire.
The home had a working smoke detector that did activate, Steele said.
The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal's office. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.
