Fire hits Lafayette grocery store
Comments 0 | Recommend 0LAFAYETTE - Pam Rockhill has been stopping into Clum's Gas and Grocery at least a couple times each week for years.
Tuesday afternoon, she watched as fire crews battled a fire in the long-time Lafayette business.
"This has been here quite awhile," she said. "People come down and get the essentials, or get gas."
The Lafayette Volunteer Fire Department was called to the store, 311 N. Washington St., at about 3:20 p.m.
The fire started in the back, or the south end of the store, Chief Scott Fisher said. The area is for storage. Smoke could be seen pouring out of the back end.
"The entry team went in and found the fire, put the fire out," he said. "The thing is, now we have smoke throughout the whole store."
There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Fisher said. Structurally the building is OK, he added, but the amount of damage to products hasn't been determined.
Rockhill lives just a few houses from the store. She heard the sirens, came outside and saw smoke coming from the back of the building. Owner Bryan Clum stood at the back as crews worked. He declined comment.
Crews from Beaverdam Fire and Rescue, Harrod Volunteer Fire Department and Westminster Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene. Many of the crews were leaving the scene around 4:30 p.m.
