KENTON - An apartment fire Tuesday afternoon killed a 4-year-old girl.

Kalyssa LeAnn Wyomic died in a fire at Kenton Village Apartments at 655 East St., Apt. 4. An autopsy was scheduled for today at the Montgomery County Coroner's Office, officials said.

Kalyssa was the daughter of Jason and Ashley Wyomic.

Medical workers treated another person for minor injuries, Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal spokesman Shane Cartmill said on Wednesday. He did not have the person's name or whether that person was a relative of Kalyssa's.

The Kenton Fire and Police departments were involved in the investigation and requested assistance from the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal, which offers assistance throughout the state, Cartmill said.

Initial reports indicated the fire may have been the result of a child playing with matches or a lighter but state fire officials were not saying that was the cause.

"We have not been able to confirm that so the investigation will continue. It's certainly one of the things we're looking at," he said.

Fire investigators collected evidence from the scene for analysis. Officials said they expect that analysis to take about a week.

Investigators found operating smoke detectors in the second-floor apartment.

"That is actually rare in a fatal fire. Typically in Ohio, about 85 percent of fatal fires occur in homes where smoke detectors do not operate," he said.

Kalyssa was the 111th person to die in Ohio in a fire this year, Cartmill said.

A damage estimate was not available but it was not a lot. It included heat and smoke damage. The building has five apartments and the fire was contained to the one, he said.
