Fifth man charged in Market Street murder
Comments 0 | Recommend 0LIMA - A fifth man has been charged with murder over the slaying of a woman on West Market Street. Police say there could be more arrests.
Bond was set at $1 million for Garrett Turner on Friday during a hearing at Lima Municipal Court on the charge of complicity to murder. Turner has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 22.
Lima police Lt. Jim Baker said there could be more arrests. Turner was in a van with two other men facing murder charges including the alleged shooters, Tony D. Curtis Jr. and Davarus E. Callahan, 22. They are accused of killing 38-year-old Wendy Westergaard on West Market Street in front of St. Rita's Medical Center on April 29.
"There is the potential for more arrests. There were definitely more people in the van than three," he said.
Police have more names of suspects to check on but have not made arrests and are not releasing the names yet, Baker said.
Westergaard was shot to death as she drove her Jeep Cherokee west on West Market Street. After she was shot, she crashed the vehicle into a tree which caused it to land on its side.
Westergaard was not the target of the shooting, Baker said.
"Wendy was giving (Durelle Grant) a ride. Durelle was the target," Baker said.
Grant, 19, who was a passenger in Westergaard's vehicle, ran from the scene following the crash. He has been charged with robbery as has Ronnie E. Irons, 21. The two men are believed to have robbed the other group of men prior to Westergaard's death, Baker said.
The crimes were over drugs, Baker said.
Turner, 31, of 412 S. Baxter St., recently got out of prison after serving four years for possession of crack cocaine. He has a lengthy criminal record, according to court records.
