A few resolution ideas for the new year

Let's just acknowledge up front that 2008 is a year most of us are happy to be rid of. The stew of war, politics, turmoil and an economy so deep in the toilet the Roto-Rooter folks are throwing up their hands has most of us at least a little optimistic that 2009 will be, almost by default, better.

Given all that, I'm certain most of you have thoughts of how you personally will be contributing to making the coming year better. But between last night's Bud Lites and this morning's Mimosas, rolling those thoughts into a game plan might be a bit of a challenge. So in the spirit of contribution that is so ‘09, I've compiled a list of resolutions for you. I've combined some self-improvement ideas with a few aimed at helping other folks. I'll try not to judge you for the one you select.

1. Join something. When times get tough, most of us recoil from the world to the comfort of home. But this is exactly the time it's best to get out and move amongst the masses. Social networking is invaluable when jobs are hard to find. Local connections help keep the market moving. More importantly, getting out with people you like and having a little fun is the best possible anecdote to misery. That said, be selective. Don't join for social status or because the boss says you should. Find a group you really want to be part of. If you can't find one, create your own. We did it when we were 9, we can do it now.

2. Take a class. We have a dozen colleges within driving distance and even more schools, libraries and museums offering classes for free or next to nothing. Learn a new skill or just delve into something you've always wanted to learn about. It will make you more intellectually confident and better yet, more fun at parties.

3. Chose a charity. Some of us spread our efforts among a plethora of good causes. Most of us do nothing at all. This year, chose one cause about which you care deeply and commit to helping. Any non-profit director will tell you, all volunteers are good, but the ones dedicated to your cause alone are golden. Give them your money or your time or, best of all, any skills you might have. Design their Web page, write grants or throw a party to help raise money. In the end, it will help the community and give you a reason to feel superior to the clowns who give nothing.

4. Get a sense of humor. This is the toughest on the list. Everybody thinks they have a sense of humor, but a lot of you really don't. Learning to be funny is tough. Start off by reading some funny books - Calvin Trilin, Janet Evanovich, whatever your taste. Move on to movies and standup. There's a smorgasbord of funny out there, so figure out what you like and lighten up.

5. Do what you say you're going to do. Seems basic enough, but I've come to conclude a good 70 percent of people shirk responsibilities they sign up for. If you're one of those, acknowledge it and improve. If you tell the boss you'll finish a project, do it. If you tell the kids you'll be at the game, show up. If your name is on the usher list at church, be there. You'll sleep better knowing you're a man or woman of your word.

6. Do what you can do, forget about the rest. Not to get too Tao on you, but happiness only comes when you have done all you can and acknowledged that the rest is out of your hands. So relax, count your blessings, put down the Mimosa and get to work.

From the editor: Many of you have expressed concerns about some of the harsh anonymous comments from readers. To remedy that, we are introducing new features. You can create your own blog, publish your news and share your photos with the community. Once you fill out a simple form and leave a verifiable e-mail address, you can set up your profile page. It will display all of your contributions and allow you to track issues and easily connect with others.

We want our site to be a place where people discuss and debate ideas that foster stronger communities. We built this for you. Please take care of it. Tolerate broad thinking, but take action against obscene or hateful material. Make it a credible and safe place worth preserving and sharing.
