Fair board president ‘wins’ new hairstyle at fair

OTTAWA - Fair board president Don Verhoff had a different hairstyle on the last day of the Putnam County Fair.

The "winner" of a contest between board members agreed to wear a Mohawk hairstyle on the final day of the fair. The contest was used by the board members to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. Anyone was allowed to stop by the fair secretary's office to place their "vote" by donating money.

Only a brief shower and windstorm interrupted Sunday's activities at the Putnam County Fair. The go-kart races had to stop for a brief period until the shower passed through.

The third annual go-kart race had 83 cars entered in the competition.

Cole Dotson, of Miller City, waited patiently for his turn at racing.

Cole, 10, said he has been racing for several years.

"My uncle and mom talked me into doing it," he said Sunday. "So far today, though, I haven't done so well."

"We're gonna turn it up a notch," his dad said hopefully.

Nearby, 5-year-old Devon Pester played with miniature tractors in the sand. By mid-afternoon he had placed third in one heat and second in another heat.

"He's a little shy," said his mother, Rhonda Pester. "But he loves to race."

The fair will conclude today with the large-animal sale in the main show arena.
