3rd windmill vandal pleads guilty

VAN WERT — A Texas man faces up to 18 months in prison when he is sentenced next month for his role in the destruction of construction equipment at a windmill site.

Cody J. Edwards, 21, of Saginaw, Texas, pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony vandalism. He is the third man to plead guilty in connection with the vandalism incident.

Edwards and two others were arrested after the incident in July that involved the destruction of a crane and lighting equipment at the site. The property was owned by Blattner Energy Co.

Judge Charles Steele of Van Wert County Common Pleas Court ordered a background check and scheduled Edwards' sentencing for March 14. The three parties will be ordered to split $58,000 in restitution for damage that was not covered by insurance.

In December, Steele sentenced two other men.

Dustin Gamble, 20, of Haviland, and Kyle Beech, 21, of Van Wert, each were given a year in prison that was deferred pending the completion of probation. Each man was convicted of felony vandalism.

Gamble and Haviland said they had been drinking when they committed the crime.

The incident happened July 2 at the windmill farm in northwestern Van Wert County near U.S. Route 30. Property damaged approached $500,000 a prosecutor said.

The men set a crane on fire, damaged lighting equipment and other equipment at the site.
